Temporary Dominance

And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28)

But damn, I wish that hadn’t been said. And I wish people hadn’t listened. And I wish those people hadn’t justified their actions with this passage.

No dominion | Created by Jay W. Austin & DALL•E

Dominion is control. It’s authority.

But y’all, we have no dominion over nature, just temporary dominance.

Even when we help “it” to heal via regenerative agriculture and permaculture, we have virtually no control. Meaning literally zero control because the most impactful input in any of these projects tends to be a drastic limitation of our influences on the ecological processes at work.

Nature will always take us, because it is us. We are not above it, superior to it, or separate from us. It is us, and we are it.
